Whether it’s suicide, Aids (a particularly maudlin Ed Harris performance in The Hours employs both), being beaten to death, state execution, getting shot, or getting raped and then shot, LGBT characters are just not allowed the happy endings that their straight counterparts enjoy. My personal favourite comes from A Single Man, in which Colin Firth simply drops dead for no reason. Presumably overwhelmed by sheer homosexuality, his heart can no longer keep beating. Beware, non-heterosexuals: Sudden Gay Death Syndrome can strike anywhere.

OR BOTH. I am so sick of this bullshit where queer characters never get to have a happy ending. One of the only times a queer character is safe from this crap is if they’re the ‘quirky’ gay friend of the straight characters, presumably because the quirky gay friend is never actually acknowledged as fucking people of the same sex, they’re just there to act slightly stereotypical and be the punchline of the kind of tired, tedious jokes that straight people find amusing like ‘OH MY GOD gay men like fashion and hair dressing that’s hillarious’ or ‘Lesbians are SO butch, isn’t that just too funny?’ It’s not limited to Hollywood either, fiction in general is infested with this crap with queer characters/couples usually being the first to be killed off when some talentless hack wants to create ‘drama’ and is too lazy to think of any interesting ways to do it It is utterly PATHETIC, lazy writing and I am so fucking bored of seeing all of these fucking hetero characters who I literally could not give a single fuck about get to have their precious little ‘Happy endings’ in fiction, while all the queer characters ever get is suffering and death Some people will say shit like ‘Oh but it shouldn’t matter what sexuality the dead character was’ And to those people I say ‘Do they have magical edible rainbows and singing fish in the delusional fantasy land you’re living in?’ IT MATTERS It matters because fiction is positively INFESTED with tedious heterosexual characters, while LGBTQ characters barely appear. Take comics for example. If you were to kill off fifty straight characters in the DCU or Marvel universe, there are still HUNDREDS if not thousands more named straight characters to read about On the other hand, if you were to kill off FIVE queer characters in the DCU right now, guess how many that would leave for queer fans to read about? LESS THAN TEN Out of the 52 titles that DC currently publishes, there is a total of fourteen canon queer characters currently appearing Or TV shows…the average TV show has maybe, at most, TWO queer couples (If we’re lucky) and most TV shows just have one or two queer characters who get NO romantic plotlines whatsoever And movies? Unless it’s a movie specifically about queer people, chances are the cast is going to be about as mind numbingly, TEDIOUSLY heterosexual as you can possibly imagine (via thefingerfuckingfemalefury) There definitely needs to be more queer characters in all media, and not just the joke-y gays on sitcoms. I haven’t seen The Fosters yet, but it’s a step in the right direction.
